Hello everyone! My name is Olivia Herring and I am a junior at the University of Southern Mississippi, majoring in Elementary Education (with endorsements in science and foreign language) and minoring in Spanish. I graduated from Purvis High School and have attended USM since my freshman year in 2012. I began my education journey in Medical Technology, with the hopes of becoming a Cardiac Radiologic Technologist, then transferred to Nursing, and finally took a 180 degree turn and decided on Elementary Education. I love to work with children, and spend time tutoring at Aldersgate Mission, working with the Girls' Club at Edwards Street Fellowship Center, and volunteering with the youth at my church. Tutoring these students at Aldersgate Mission has really shown me the injustice of poverty and the never-ending cycle it causes. When children do not have the resources to learn, they cannot get a good job to support their family, they then do not have the means to provide their children with a quality education, and the process is repeated. Education is so important, and I really believe The Lord has given me the opportunity and the desire to do something to improve it for our low-income students. I enjoy foreign language, and have considered working with ELL students, but I would really love to teach middle school science in low-income schools.
